Rugby Team Fined for Fans’ Abuse of Gay Athlete

In the United States, Chicago’s Pride celebration was bolstered by the visible participation of straight pro athletes. In the U.K., a rugby team has been slapped with a hefty fine because its fans hurled homophobic verbal abuse at an opposing team’s openly gay star player.

The fine stems from a March 26 match between the Castleford Tigers and the Crusaders, during which Tigers supporters shouted anti-gay chants targeting openly gay Crusaders team member Gareth Thomas, reported U.K. GLBT news site Pink News on June 29.

The Rugby Football League (RFL) imposed a fine of more than $60,000 on the Tigers, reported Pink News. In a statement, the RFL announced that, "Castleford were found guilty of unacceptable behavior, of breaching the RFL’s respect policy, of misconduct by their supporters and of conduct prejudicial to the interests of the sport." New Mexico HS Football Hazing

A hazing scandal, in which six football players sodomized nine younger players at a football camp in 2008, has resulted in a civil lawsuit. The victims and their families filed a lawsuit on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, as reported by KOAT.

In 2008, the Robertson High School football team attended a football camp near Las Vegas, N.M., when six older players sodomized nine younger players with a broomstick.

The older players were kicked off the team and expelled as a result of the hazing incident.

The victims and their families have since filed a civil lawsuit against more than 30 defendants, including the six football players, their parents, Las Vegas City Schools and administration, the coaches and the camp where the hazing took place. The lawsuit is seeking damages for the sexual attacks, violation of civil rights and the conspiracy the plaintiff’s allege is surrounding the incident.

The coaches were not properly certified and they laughed off the incident when it took place, according to the lawsuit. The suit also claims that the school, the camp or the adults in charge did not provide a safe environment from the start.

High School Game Forfeited After Three Innings, 45-0 Lead

A baseball game in Wisconsin was called off after three innings this week when Three Lakes High School ran up a 45-0 lead against Phelps High School.

"It was kind of embarrassing. I feel bad," Three Lakes coach Jeff Liebscher told the local newspaper.

When I see scores like 45-0 in high school sports, I always feel like it's got to be poor sportsmanship on the part of the winning team, and one detail in the local newspaper account -- the fact that Three Lakes stole 11 bases in the first inning -- makes me think this was another such case.

On the other hand, from all indications, the Phelps High School team is just really, really bad.

Cavaliers Owner: LeBron Quit on Us During Playoffs

Cavaliers Owner: LeBron Quit on Us During Playoffs

Hell hath no fury like a billionaire scorned! No sooner had LeBron “Everybody, Look at Me!” James decided to pack his money bags and move to Miami then Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert started badmouthing his ex. Wonder if this would have happened if LeBron had decided to stay in Cleveland? Probably not.

Angered and betrayed by LeBron James’ decision to leave for Miami, Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert accused the NBA’s MVP of quitting during the playoffs. Gilbert, who posted a letter to Cavs fans on the team’s website shortly after James announced his plans to sign with the Heat, told The Associated Press late Thursday night that it’s “accountability time” for James.

“He has gotten a free pass,” Gilbert said in a phone interview with The AP. “People have covered up for [James] for way too long. Tonight we saw who he really is.” Gilbert said James quit on the Cavs during their second-round series against the Boston Celtics, who rallied from a 2-1 deficit to eliminate Cleveland.

“He quit,” Gilbert said. “Not just in Game 5, but in Games 2, 4 and 6. Watch the tape. The Boston series was unlike anything in the history of sports for a superstar.” The Cavaliers were beaten by 32 points in Game 5. During the game, James appeared distracted and uninterested, often glaring at Cleveland’s coaches as the Cavs tried to foul to get back into the game in the second half. James also made some puzzling postgame comments, saying he had “spoiled” people with his play over seven seasons.

Harper tossed; Coyotes at a loss

Harper tossed; Coyotes at a loss

Slugger ejected for protesting, out two games

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- Often this season, Bryce Harper has said the College of Southern Nevada is much more than a one-man baseball team. As true as that statement is, Harper has been the leader.

"I'm not the only guy on the team," he said early this week.

The Coyotes are about to find out how far they can go without their star slugger.

Harper was ejected from Wednesday night's game in the fifth inning after protesting a called third strike. He was escorted from the stadium and driven away by his father, Ron.

Westhill substitution mistake gives Bishop Ludden win

Westhill substitution mistake gives Bishop Ludden win
By: Brian Sandler

SYRACUSE - A wild game ended without a final out being recorded as Westhill baseball was called for a player re-insertion error in the bottom of the seventh to give No. 3-ranked Bishop Ludden an 11-9 win in the 3rd Annual Strike Out Lou Gehrig's Disease Baseball Classic Friday at Alliance Bank Stadium.

With Bishop Ludden leading 4-3 going into the seventh, the Gaelic Knights erupted for seven runs to go ahead 11-3. Westhill responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame and had the tying run at the plate with two outs, but at that point it was discovered the Warriors' rally was helped by a player who had already been taken out, put back in and taken out again (high school rules allow only one re-insertion). At that point the umpires ruled the game over even though the mistake was caught after another batter had taken his turn.

Westhill protested the decision based on that fact and the umpires later agreed, which would have forced the game to resume. But the Warriors then dropped their protest because they admitted the mistake was theirs and did not want to potentially win in a tarnished way.

The victory improves Bishop Ludden to 10-0 while Westhill falls to 6-4. The teams meet again Monday night at Bishop Ludden.

NHL Exec Accused of Bashing Woman After Loss

Losing in the Stanley Cup playoffs can be a painful experience -- especially for the woman who claims the GM of the Anaheim Ducks smacked her with a chair after the team lost in Game 7 last year.

The woman -- Rachel Paris -- is suing the team, as well as their GM Bob Murray, claiming Murray went into a "fit of rage" after the Ducks lost to the Detroit Red Wings last year.

According to the lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Michigan, Murray "picked up a high back chair and struck [Rachel] thereby knocking [Rachel] to the ground."

Rachel claims the Ducks are on the hook because "they had a duty to ensure that proper measures and protocols were in place to help curtail Bob Murray's violent and aggressive nature."

Rachel, who says she was working as a TV broadcast stage manager at the time, also claims she suffered "severe bodily injuries." She's demanding more than $75,000 in damages.

Calls to the Ducks have not been returned.
