Products For Sports Injuries
Products For Sports Injuries
By guest author: Cheryl L LeKane
Sport injuries are those which occur while playing sports or doing physical exercise. Some are the result of an accident, while others come from bad training practices or inappropriate use of training equipment. In some cases, these injuries are due to inadequate warming up or stretching before play or exercise.
The most common sports injuries are:
- Sprains or twisted ligaments and pulled muscles or torn tendons
- Knee injuries
- Muscle swelling
- Fractures
- Dislocations
What is the difference between acute and chronic injuries?
There are two types of sports injuries, acute and chronic. Acute injuries occur suddenly while you are playing sport or exercising. The most frequent acute injuries include sprained ankles, back distensions and fractures to hand and wrist.
The symptoms that accompany an acute injury include:
- Sudden severe pain
- Swelling
- Inability to rest weight on the affected leg, knee, ankle or foot
- Bad pains in the affected arm, elbow, wrist, hand or finger
- Inability to move a joint normally
- Extreme weakness in a leg or arm
- A bone or joint which is visibly out fo place
Chronic injuries occur after sporting activities or exercise and last a long time.
The symptoms associated with chronic injuries include:
- Pain whilst playing sport
- Pain whilst exercising
- Slight pain even while resting
- Swelling
What should I do if I suffer an injury?
Never try to "just put up with" the pain of a sports injury. Stop playing sport or exercising as soon as you notice the pain. Going on can only worsen the injury. some injuries must be examined immediately by a doctor. Others, you can treat yourself.
Call for a doctor when:
- The injury causes severe pain, swelling or loss of feeling
- You cannot support any weight on the injured area
- A previous injury gives you pain
- A previous injury swells up
- A joint is abnormal or unstable in any way
I you are not suffering from any of these symptoms, you can safely treat your injury at home. If the pain or other symptoms worse, you should call a doctor. use the ICER method (Ice, Compression, Elevation and Rest) to alleviate pain, reduces swelling and speed up the healing process. Follow those four steps as soon as the injury occurs and over the following 48 hours.
What is the usual treatment for sports injuries?
The ICER method is the most commonly employed treatment for sport injuries. non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications are also employed, as is immobilization. In some cases surgery may be required. After surgery there will be a period of rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation includes exercises that help the injured area to return step-by-step to a normal condition. Certain movements help the injured area recover. Rehabilitation should begin as soon as possible. Exercises start with a series of gentle movements of the injured area. this is followed by stretching. After a while, weights can be added to strengthen the injured area.

Steroids in Youth Sports
Steroids in Youth Sports
By guest author: Rebecca Stigall
It used to be that kids would join little league teams excited to play baseball, football and hockey. Young boys all over the country had dreams of being the next Mickey Mantle or Roger Staubauch. These days, as kids innocently join teams ready to begin their dream of becoming a professional in their chosen sport, and as parents cheer from the stands hoping that their little one doesn't get hurt, the pressure to be bigger, faster and stronger than the other guy gets harder to ignore.
With professional sports contracts paying out millions of dollars for each player every year, a kid's dreams can bring him fame and a pretty big fortune. But only if he is successful at beating out every other kid with the same dream. Out of the 1,500 or so active professional football players, there are maybe millions of kids who dream of being a great pro quarterback. With those odds, kids, sometimes coaches, and sometimes even parents begin looking for an edge for their child. Even though they are illegal to use more and more kids are turning to steroids to give them the edge they are looking for.
Steroids are hormone drugs that make athletes stronger and more muscular. This is an obvious advantage on the football field. Kids realize that their high school sports years are when college recruiters are going to make offers to the best players to play on a college team. Being recruited by a major college means that the player will get not only a free ride scholarship to the college but will play on a great team and then maybe get a job on a pro team. This is true for high school baseball, soccer, and hockey team players too. Kids are sometimes introduced to steroids as young as junior high school and sometimes the pressure to be the best makes the steroids too hard to resist. Also, some kids are given silent permission to use steroids by their coaches and parents because these adults may recognize the signs that a teen is using steroids but not do anything about it.
Steroid use can cause some pretty complicated side effects. Young men who use steroids can become larger and more muscular very quickly. They can also have bad acne breakouts, they can be shaky, have bad body odor, mood swings, and become aggressive and hard to get along with. For girls, using steroids can make them moody, and give them facial hair and a deeper voice. Unfortunately, many of these things are present during the teen years anyway. Some of the more scary side effects are heart damage, liver damage, and shrinking of the testicles.
Even over the counter steroids have side effects. Protein drinks and steroid powders are available in health food stores and kids have easy access to these products. Since teen steroid users are not done growing the damage that steroids do can mean much more to them than to adults. Even over the counter steroids can cause kidney damage and heart damage.
As many as thirty million kids play a sport in this country and up to 11 percent of those kids have at least tried steroids. Steroids are a drug and using them is illegal. Sometimes kids are introduced to steroids by their coach. There have been some recent stories in the news about coaches who gave their players steroids or who suggested that the player give steroids a try to become a better player. Most often, another player introduces them to the drug either because the user brags about using steroids or a weaker player befriends the stronger one and the steroid user shares his secret. Read more.

Cheating in the NFL
Cheating in the NFL
By guest author: Martin Chase
Who would have thought it would come to this? What has professional sports come to with cheating? NBA, MLB, and Hockey have been caught cheating and now the NFL is joining the rest of the professional sports leagues as a sport that cheats.
As a former NFL player, I would always hear the saying, "If you're not cheating, you're not trying." Pretty sad isn't it? Well, I think the Patriots took that statement to heart and that is why they got caught. Unfortunately, cheating is much more common in the NFL than fans realize.
When I played in the NFL, there were many teams that I played against that by "magic" seemed to know what our plays were. There were teams that I played against where I would ask myself, "How on earth do they know what plays we are running?"
You should know that cheating runs rampant in the NFL and it is not just the Patriots that are cheating. Yes, they got caught because they made their cheating too obvious. But make no mistake about it, it is a fact that all NFL teams cheat to some extent.
In my NFL career I was taught that a team has to do whatever it can do to get an advantage over the competition, and that cheating is considered okay as long as you don't get caught. It is just a part of the game. But in my heart I knew that cheating was wrong. As professional athletes and professional sports teams, we are supposed to be setting a good example of the highest level of sports. But we are not setting a good example. We are not playing fair. Maybe you can say cheating is fair because everybody is doing it but I think it is wrong. I believe in fair competition and what is happening in professional sports with cheating is a disgrace.
Another huge problem caused by pro teams cheating is that it teaches our children that cheating is ok--as long as you don't get caught. As pro athletes and sports teams, we need to set an example and teach kids that cheating is wrong.
Cheating is a black and white issue and there should be no grey areas. You cannot say cheating is okay for some things but wrong for other things. Cheating is always wrong and it cannot be tolerated. Cheating has a snowball effect. Kids learn that if they don't get caught, cheating is okay. So, after cheating a few times on small things and not getting caught, they move up to cheating on bigger things. That is when the real problems start as children and young adults do not understand the consequences for their actions, and by cheating they are being a dishonorable human being. If you cannot be trusted to play fair, you should not be allowed to play.
I feel that teams that cheat need to be punished and punished severely. Besides being fined and penalized with losing draft choices. Your team should automatically lose the game too. Coaches caught cheating should be suspended without pay for the season, or even fired. There has to be a system in place where the consequences of cheating are so severe that teams will not risk getting caught. It is sad that it has to come to this but cheating cannot be tolerated.

Hockey mom accused of embezzlement - 500K
Hockey mom accused of embezzlement
PHOENIX - A former acting treasurer for the Arizona High School Hockey Association has been arrested for allegedly embezzling at least $500,000 from the group.
Phoenix police say 47-year-old Mary Ann Williams was booked into jail Tuesday on charges of theft, fraud and forgery.
Police say Williams began volunteering for the northeast Phoenix organization in 2003 when her son began playing hockey. They say an investigation into Williams began six months ago when the association contacted police about concerns she was stealing money.
Police say it appears Williams began embezzling money from the organization in 2005 and continued until she was removed from the acting treasurer's post earlier this year. She is accused of issuing checks to herself and to personal debtors, making electronic payments from the association's bank account and using its debit card for personal purchases.
It was unclear Wednesday whether Williams had hired a lawyer.

Rugby Team Fined for Fans’ Abuse of Gay Athlete
In the United States, Chicago’s Pride celebration was bolstered by the visible participation of straight pro athletes. In the U.K., a rugby team has been slapped with a hefty fine because its fans hurled homophobic verbal abuse at an opposing team’s openly gay star player.
The fine stems from a March 26 match between the Castleford Tigers and the Crusaders, during which Tigers supporters shouted anti-gay chants targeting openly gay Crusaders team member Gareth Thomas, reported U.K. GLBT news site Pink News on June 29.
The Rugby Football League (RFL) imposed a fine of more than $60,000 on the Tigers, reported Pink News. In a statement, the RFL announced that, "Castleford were found guilty of unacceptable behavior, of breaching the RFL’s respect policy, of misconduct by their supporters and of conduct prejudicial to the interests of the sport." New Mexico HS Football Hazing
A hazing scandal, in which six football players sodomized nine younger players at a football camp in 2008, has resulted in a civil lawsuit. The victims and their families filed a lawsuit on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, as reported by KOAT.
In 2008, the Robertson High School football team attended a football camp near Las Vegas, N.M., when six older players sodomized nine younger players with a broomstick.
The older players were kicked off the team and expelled as a result of the hazing incident.
The victims and their families have since filed a civil lawsuit against more than 30 defendants, including the six football players, their parents, Las Vegas City Schools and administration, the coaches and the camp where the hazing took place. The lawsuit is seeking damages for the sexual attacks, violation of civil rights and the conspiracy the plaintiff’s allege is surrounding the incident.
The coaches were not properly certified and they laughed off the incident when it took place, according to the lawsuit. The suit also claims that the school, the camp or the adults in charge did not provide a safe environment from the start.

High School Game Forfeited After Three Innings, 45-0 Lead
A baseball game in Wisconsin was called off after three innings this week when Three Lakes High School ran up a 45-0 lead against Phelps High School.
"It was kind of embarrassing. I feel bad," Three Lakes coach Jeff Liebscher told the local newspaper.
When I see scores like 45-0 in high school sports, I always feel like it's got to be poor sportsmanship on the part of the winning team, and one detail in the local newspaper account -- the fact that Three Lakes stole 11 bases in the first inning -- makes me think this was another such case.
On the other hand, from all indications, the Phelps High School team is just really, really bad.

Cavaliers Owner: LeBron Quit on Us During Playoffs
Cavaliers Owner: LeBron Quit on Us During Playoffs
Hell hath no fury like a billionaire scorned! No sooner had LeBron “Everybody, Look at Me!” James decided to pack his money bags and move to Miami then Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert started badmouthing his ex. Wonder if this would have happened if LeBron had decided to stay in Cleveland? Probably not.
Angered and betrayed by LeBron James’ decision to leave for Miami, Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert accused the NBA’s MVP of quitting during the playoffs. Gilbert, who posted a letter to Cavs fans on the team’s website shortly after James announced his plans to sign with the Heat, told The Associated Press late Thursday night that it’s “accountability time” for James.
“He has gotten a free pass,” Gilbert said in a phone interview with The AP. “People have covered up for [James] for way too long. Tonight we saw who he really is.” Gilbert said James quit on the Cavs during their second-round series against the Boston Celtics, who rallied from a 2-1 deficit to eliminate Cleveland.
“He quit,” Gilbert said. “Not just in Game 5, but in Games 2, 4 and 6. Watch the tape. The Boston series was unlike anything in the history of sports for a superstar.” The Cavaliers were beaten by 32 points in Game 5. During the game, James appeared distracted and uninterested, often glaring at Cleveland’s coaches as the Cavs tried to foul to get back into the game in the second half. James also made some puzzling postgame comments, saying he had “spoiled” people with his play over seven seasons.
Here’s more from ESPN.

Westhill substitution mistake gives Bishop Ludden win
By: Brian Sandler
SYRACUSE - A wild game ended without a final out being recorded as Westhill baseball was called for a player re-insertion error in the bottom of the seventh to give No. 3-ranked Bishop Ludden an 11-9 win in the 3rd Annual Strike Out Lou Gehrig's Disease Baseball Classic Friday at Alliance Bank Stadium.
With Bishop Ludden leading 4-3 going into the seventh, the Gaelic Knights erupted for seven runs to go ahead 11-3. Westhill responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame and had the tying run at the plate with two outs, but at that point it was discovered the Warriors' rally was helped by a player who had already been taken out, put back in and taken out again (high school rules allow only one re-insertion). At that point the umpires ruled the game over even though the mistake was caught after another batter had taken his turn.
Westhill protested the decision based on that fact and the umpires later agreed, which would have forced the game to resume. But the Warriors then dropped their protest because they admitted the mistake was theirs and did not want to potentially win in a tarnished way.
The victory improves Bishop Ludden to 10-0 while Westhill falls to 6-4. The teams meet again Monday night at Bishop Ludden.

NHL Exec Accused of Bashing Woman After Loss
Losing in the Stanley Cup playoffs can be a painful experience -- especially for the woman who claims the GM of the Anaheim Ducks smacked her with a chair after the team lost in Game 7 last year.
The woman -- Rachel Paris -- is suing the team, as well as their GM Bob Murray, claiming Murray went into a "fit of rage" after the Ducks lost to the Detroit Red Wings last year.
According to the lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Michigan, Murray "picked up a high back chair and struck [Rachel] thereby knocking [Rachel] to the ground."
Rachel claims the Ducks are on the hook because "they had a duty to ensure that proper measures and protocols were in place to help curtail Bob Murray's violent and aggressive nature."
Rachel, who says she was working as a TV broadcast stage manager at the time, also claims she suffered "severe bodily injuries." She's demanding more than $75,000 in damages.
Calls to the Ducks have not been returned.

Poor sporting behavior incidents reported to National Association of Sports Officials
Every day in America and around the world, sports officials are physically and verbally harassed. Most incidents do not require police or medical assistance, but in some cases, the harassment turns violent.
The fact that such behavior occurs at sporting events involving youth participants is appalling in itself, but the frequency in which these reports now occur is even more disturbing.
NASO receives more than 100 reports annually that involve physical contact between coaches, players, fans and officials. The nearly 18,000 member organization is not the "clearinghouse for bad behavior," says NASO President Barry Mano, but it is the belief by NASO that the reports it receives is only the "tip of the iceberg."
The following are examples of some incidents.
• Pennsylvania (Basketball) — A parent body-slammed a high school referee after he ordered the man’s wife out of the gym for allegedly yelling obscenities during a basketball game. The referee was treated at a hospital for a concussion and released after the Feb. 6 attack. Charged with simple assault, assault on a sports official, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct is Peter J. Dukovich, 47, Hampton, Pa. (Contributing source: CNN.com) UPDATE: RaeLynn Dukovich was levied the maximum fine of $300 and court costs for her involvement in the incident. (Contributing source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

The fact that such behavior occurs at sporting events involving youth participants is appalling in itself, but the frequency in which these reports now occur is even more disturbing.

Saints assistant coach pleads guilty in real estate swindle
Lost and forgotten in the wake of the Vicodin-related allegations that engulfed the Saints in late April was a case that first arose in March.
Federal authorities named Saints assistant defensive line coach Travis Jones, who still appears on the team's official website as the holder of that specific position, in an indictment related to a real estate scam in Texas.
At the time, Jones' lawyer painted the coach as a victim.
Earlier this month, Jones pleaded guilty.
On June 1, Jones signed a "Factual Statement" that included a full confession as to his involvement in the fraudulent financing of two properties. His role, as admitted by Jones in the document, "was to make materially false statements on Loan Applications and other real estate documents in order to induce lending institutions to lend funds for the purchase of certain properties and to obtain a portion of these funds for personal use."
As to one property, Jones claimed he earned $75,000 per month in borrowing more than $920,000. As to the other property, he again claimed a monthly salary of $75,000 in connection with a loan in the amount of nearly $779,000.
For his role in the scam, Jones was paid $86,225.28 -- and the banks lost more than $1.148 million.
On June 23, Jones pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges. He'll be sentenced at a later date.
The transactions occurred before Jones worked for the Saints. At the time, he was employed by the Dolphins.
Over the weekend, Jones conducted a free youth football camp in Macon, Georgia. He's a native of, yes, Milledgeville.
The alleged ringleader, John Barry, has been charged in connection with a total of 114 properties. Jones' involvement was limited to the two situations as to which he pleaded guilty.

Footnote.....
Travis Jones Football Camp Held in Wilkinson County
Young football players rarely have a chance to learn from a Super Bowl champion, but 175 Central Georgia kids did just that Friday from Wilkinson County native Travis Jones.
Jones is a D-Line coach for the New Orleans Saints, and brought his championship experience to Macon for a fifth year in the Travis Jones Football Camp.
Jones emphasizes teaching the basics of each position instead of the standard running and passing drills, which he says gives the kids a good foundation for their athletic futures
"We want to teach these kids the pro position they're interested in, teach them the fundamentals of the game including the details of that position. I think that's critical in a kid's growth so they can learn the play the position with the finest detail so they can be a good player at that position," said Jones.
The camp is free and continues Saturday. It's for kids 7 to 15-years-old. You can register at 7:30 a.m. at the Ed Defore Sports Complex next to Westside High School.

3 Indians minor-leaguers charged in Ohio bar fight
Jun 25, 11:42 PM (ET)
AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Police charged three minor-league Cleveland Indians players, one of them the son of Houston Astros manager Brad Mills, after a fight at a nightclub earlier this month left a man with rib and lung injuries.
Akron Aeros first baseman Beau Mills, Aeros outfielder Jerad Head and Columbus Clippers pitcher Josh Tomlin were charged with felonious assault in a criminal complaint Tuesday. The charges stem from a June 3 fight at Whiskey Dick's in Akron.
The injured man, Theodore Zeman III, told police that a group of ballplayers were taunting him while he was at the bar, then assaulted him after he raised his hand in a gesture to stop them, according to a police report. Zeman, 25, of Seven Hills, spent at least two days in the hospital after sustaining a punctured lung and rib fractures in the brawl, Akron police Lt. Rick Edwards said.
Mills, 23, of Visalia, Calif., and Head, 27, of Topeka, Kan., pleaded not guilty in Akron Municipal Court on Thursday. Tomlin was in court Friday but didn't enter a plea and is due back in court Monday, Edwards said.
Messages for the players were sent by The Associated Press to the teams Friday morning.
Brad Mills, asked about his son's arrest Friday before his team played in Texas, said he had been in contact with him.
"There's really nothing to say," Mills said. "Over time, we'll see how things come out."

The Ten Most Frightfully Bad Sports Franchises
There’s nothing worse than being a fan of a really awful sports franchise. Enduring year after year of piss-poor ownership decisions, laughable general manager moves, questionable drafting, nonsensical coaching and dreadful player performance can make even the sanest person bust a brain synapse and drift into a catatonic state of deep depression.
Following your favorite team is supposed to be gratifying, or at the very least, fun. However, when said team has been mired in a prolonged period of futility and is the constant butt of cruel jokes, there is no such thing as joy in the hearts of its fanbase.
On this Hallows Eve, I thought it fitting to take a look at ten scary bad franchises. These teams aren’t just bad, they are a veritable house of horrors from top to bottom. Some are failed expansion experiments, others are former winners that have fallen on hard times, and a few just plain suck.

Cheating in a Mountain Bike Race...
It's bad form to use someone else's race number to compete in a race you aren't registered for. And it's indefensible to claim a prize as a result of the deception. But a felony? That's what a couple of mountain bike racers are facing after deceiving race officials in last year's Leadville Trail 100, a legendary endurance race.
In no way do we condone the actions of Wendy Lyall, 36, and Katie Brazelton, 40. Brazelton apparently could not compete in the race because of an injury and gave her number to Lyall, who ended up finishing second in the 40-49 age group. But instead of admitting the deception, someone — it's not clear who — appeared at the awards ceremony and accepted the honor and prizes at the podium. That's despicable, and both women ought to be barred from ever competing in the Leadville race again.
Given the prominence of the race, and the close-knit mountain bike racing community, the disgrace that goes with such banishment is a suitably severe punishment. However, District Attorney Mark Hurlbert has filed a felony charge of criminal impersonation against Lyall, and is contemplating the same for Brazelton. That's too severe.
A felony conviction for cheating? Please.
